Trying Something Different on My Brain

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

For my New Year's resolution this year I've decided to hit the non-fiction books hard. As an author, I love to read fiction, but not so much the real world type of stuff. I do read craft books on writing. I read books about the subjects I write about so, space and technology, some crime procedural manuals, even the occasional history. Not the greatest reading list for expanding the mind.

Over December I came across some fun accounts on social media touting some very interesting sounding books. I'll include a list below, but suffice it to say, I am raring to start on my TBR pile now!

From the mysteries of why we need sleep to the inner power of introverts, these titles have a lot to offer in terms of a 'different view' of people, history, even the future.

I just finished my first one, a book called, The Gift of Fear, by Gavin De Becker. A riveting walk through key indicators and behaviors that give clues on how to predict and avoid violence in your life. Chapters cover family dynamics, spousal and adolescent scenarios, workplace and educational situations, and more.

What I thought would be dry lessons on psychology turned out to be chapters full of real-life cases with breakdowns that help the reader recognize what they already know. Intuition, the soaring pattern-processing ability we all have is largely ignored in favor of politeness. Particularly by women, who have been conditioned to always be pleasant.

The author empowers people to believe their gut. To act on it without judgment. And to be confident in their decisions. It's a fascinating read that I highly recommend.

The next book I plan to read is, Quiet by Susan Cain. It's about the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking. It should arrive in just a few days so I'll keep you all posted.

I hope that seeing the world through the eyes of these studious people, might help me to make sense of the craziness. If not, I'll be so much fun at cocktail parties, should they ever resume. I'm using the book list from Eryn Brought A Book and if you have TikTok I suggest you check her out.

If you'd like to come along with me on this enlightening journey, I post often on my Instagram and Twitter about what I'm reading. What about you? Are you starting any goals this year? What are you reading right now?
